Christians tell new bar: Too much cum!
3,000 Christians are happy that Ithaca, the tasty looking £3.6million bar-cum-restaurant on St Johns Street, is opening soon. What they're not happy about is the plans to make it a bar-cum-restaurant-cum-nightclub. Probably because it'll mean loud music till 4am outside their favourite church. And a priest lives there.
The MEN carries the story and quotes local Canon Denis Clinch:
Hitting back, Ithaca has promised to include £25,000 worth of sound proofing, and they're operating an over-21s policy. And we all know that once you hit 21, you stop making a noise when you're pissed off your face. A more valid point is that the entrance to the club will be located on St Johns Street, and the church is based on Mulberry Street. Which is how close? Fairly....

The MEN and the 3,000 people who've signed a petition seem to be missing one thing. It's not about a nightclub keeping a priest awake. It's about a nightclub keeping a 212 year old priest awake. Canon Clinch explains more:
Ba-boom tish.

"These venues definitely have a place in a modern city like Manchester but I think that this simply isn't the correct location for somewhere which hopes to play music until 4am. I have no problem with there being a bar or restaurant on the site which closes at 11.30pm - but I don't think that it is an appropriate venue for a nightclub."

"a priest has lived on this site continuously since the church was founded in 1794."
