First look at pure
I got a sneeky peek at the new Pure club in the Printworks from Simon Morrison (A member of the old guard of Mancunian PR's, who runs the Sketchpad PR Agency).
The huge venue holds a whopping 2,600 - the biggest in Manchester - and Simon was honest about the type of crowd they're expecting. Saturdays will be full on 'Printworks' but their plans for their Friday nights do sound interesting. Hed Kandi opens on the 30th - not exactly underground, but I don't mind their CD's as party music and I'm sure it'll be a decent experience hearing them on the Phazon.
I asked about the direction the Friday nights would take and I was given the names of three DJs lined up to play in October and November. I won't name them, as they're all TBC's rather than TBA's, but they were big. Some literally. It'll be interesting to see how the Friday nights develop, and there was talk of live music at the venue - backed up by the three dressing rooms, complete with en-suite showers.
The rest of the venue was still being completed, hence the lack of photographs inside. The place was teaming with builders and it wouldn't have done it any justice, instead there's some very interesting snaps of the sign outside for you to paw over, and a door.
Inside...
The main entranceway leads down into a foyeur, which I'm told accommodates 200 - the idea is that you stay dry and warm whilst you wait in line. Two big-ass metal detectors stood there menacingly, but these are a positive safety feature that I think would be a welcome addition in any Manchester club. Roll down some more steps and you're into the main room, with a decent amount of seating and two sectioned off areas. The rest of this floor is taken up with another clubspace that contains a bar and second dancefloor. Upstairs you have a VIP suite that overlooks this space, with a wrap around bar that leads down to the main room. There's also a V-VIP room that had it's own bar, and overlooks the dancefloor. It was caked in leather and looked amazing, although I'm not sure how 'A-list' you have to be in order to book it.
Next door is the Pure Magic bar, which is decked out to look very New York, i.e. plenty of wood and masses of height, although it's only a very small bar with a capacity of around 100. At the front corner lies a piano, whilst the overstretched bar has a central magic platform. A camera above it allows tricks to be viewed on the big screen, whilst performance magicians wander around the crowd. For me, the jury is still out on this whole concept, but the place looks great. If they can back that up with genuinly good magic tricks then it should be a success.
Simon did a good job of convincing me that this venue will work. In its favour is the sound system, their future DJ bookings, the 'inside' queue and the decor. There are also an awful lot of bars, which should eraddicate everyones pet peeve - waiting for a drink.
The club opens tonight (Friday 30th).
